Geralt attacks with his sword in some wild and crazy looking poses by clicking on an enemy, but instead of mashing the mouse button, you must wait until the mouse icon changes to get the combo going. It's a hybrid of third-person and isometric action with an odd combo system, and none of the offer control schemes are typical of either genre. The gameplay can be the real deal-breaker for some people, though. There's a lot of replay value in the first game that still stands up to today's standards, and the choices carry into the second game.

You may anger an NPC who won't give you a quest or aggro a certain faction. There are often three different options - good, bad and neutral - but how they connect with choices or affect certain side quests differs. The story choices in The Witcher: EE are also complex, in many cases as much or more so than ones in Witcher 3. Some things are new, but it mostly follows what was going on in the books at the time. If you've read the books, it's less jarring to pick up the first game because you'll be familiar with the characters and recognize the landscape. With the third game's success, the Witcher franchise has really taken off, and we now have access to the full saga. Geralt is just as confused as the player when he encounters old friends, but together, they learn more about them and his past. Geralt regaining the basic aspects of his memory serves as both a tutorial and worldbuilding and is a great setup for players who were likely unfamiliar with the books, as they'd not been translated to English at the time. The Witcher: EE takes place years after the end of the seventh Witcher book, Lady of the Lake, and starts with an amnesiac Geralt being rescued from the Wild Hunt by fellow School of the Wolf Witchers. Few choices made their way into The Witcher 3, but there are some nods and dialogue options for carrying a save across each game. The story in The Witcher: EE is very different from what more recent players are used to. Even story quests can have several tasks, making areas feel more like the open world of The Witcher 3. On top of this, there are more side quests to complete for each area, giving the player plenty to do before moving on. However, many areas are bigger than Witcher 2's and some allow travel between them. Areas are divided up like in the Witcher 2, and story progression leads to leaving the current area, usually closing it off.

It sounds weird since it was the first game, but its progression plays out in both an area and open-world way. The first game can best be described as a combination of The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3.
